難易度：　5 （やさしい 1⇔5 難しい）　　1964年のとある雪の日、DavidとNorahの間に、双子の赤ちゃんPaulとPhebeが生まれた。しかし妹のPhebeはダウン症を持って生まれてきたため、Davidは彼女を施設に預けるよう助産師Carolineに託す。妻のNorahにはPhebeは死産だったと伝えて…。

　　まるで風景画でも観ているかのような綺麗な小説。そのせいか、物語はちょっと平坦でもあるかなぁ。　長いタイムスパンで進むストーリーだから、読んでいくうちに長いこと一家を知ってるような、不思議な錯覚も起こるんよねぇ。
