Last but not least, I thought Twisted was a little bit Deaver's earliest work, although I'm not quite sure why. Featuring Petra Connor, the female Hollywood detective we met in Billy Straight and A Cold Heart, whilst there is a little bit of a by-the-numbers feel to it, and it lacks the both the intensity and the pace of Kellerman's best work, it's a lot better than the recent Alex Delaware books, which seem a bit tired. The mysteries (plural) seem almost incidental, and it's the psychology of Petra and a young innocent genius helping her, both very ordinary but at the same time sympathetically interesting, which lifts this work above average.
