It's a thought provoking enough book, but I found the way the author is unable to tell Kate, who has leukemia, tough luck but that's life babe, irritating.
Her little sister Anna was conceived as a donor, but at 13, she hires a lawyer to say no more. But it turns out she didn't take this course of action for herself, but because her sister asked her to. She wins her court case, but is ironically killed in a car crash whereas her sister miraculously lives to a ripe old age. Yes, presumptions about Kate's odds of survival and the likely quality of her life is tantamount to playing God, but although the mother obviously loves both her daughters, the writer leans towards keeping Kate alive over Anna being her own person. This attitude may be provocative in the States, though the norm in Japan, it still feels like Jodi Picoult has avoided a lot of issues.
