極度な管理社会（ビックブラザー）を描いたジョージ・オーウェルの余りにも有名な小説。
1949年出版であるも、管理社会を成し遂げるための手法について、現在でも独裁国家において共通することがあると考えると、恐ろしい程にジョージ・オーウェルは将来を見通す力があったといえる。
そして、それは、必ずしも独裁国家でなくとも、例えば、アメリカでも現象面として起こっているのだ。

例えば、ビックブラザー管理下では、歴史が塗り替えられ、人々に思考をさせないために、言葉を意識的に簡略化してしまう。（歴史を否定したり、知的であることを否定する動きは、民主国家というわれる国々でも起こっていることでないか）
また、科学はもはやなくなり（２＋２＝５を信じる）、常に他国と戦争状態に置くことで集団心理をかき立てる。

本著を、決して古い本として捉えるのではなく、今なお、社会に対して警鐘を鳴らすに値する本として精読し、投げかけられたテーマに対して、向き合っていくべきだと思う。
