Toru Okada's cat has disappeared and this has unsettled his wife, who is herself growing more distant every day. Then there are the increasingly explicit telephone calls he has started receiving. As this compelling story unfolds, the tidy suburban realities of Okada's vague and blameless life, spent cooking, reading, listening to jazz and opera and drinking beer at the kitchen table, are turned inside out, and he embarks on a bizarre journey, guided (however obscurely) by a succession of characters, each with a tale to tell.

村上春樹作品の中では、「ノルウェイの森」と並んで苦手なタイプの話だった。笠原メイ、加納マルタ・クレタ、ナツメグとシナモン、それぞれ象徴するものがあったのだろうけど意味深なのになんだかわからないエピソードが多くて途中本気で読むのがつらくて何度か放りだした(笑)でも、なぜか井戸からワンダーランドに繋がる展開以降は違和感なく、あぁ村上ワールドだなぁとよくわからないままなんとなく納得させられてしまった不思議。この作品を通じてノモンハン事件のことを知れたのはよかった。

初めて読了した洋書。村上春樹の文は読みやすいので、日本語で読むとすらすら読んでしまう。ペーパーバックだとじっくり読むことになって、むしろ物語の凄さに気付くことができた。改めて村上春樹の素晴らしさを実感した一冊。

気が向いたときに、ぱっと開いたページを一章だけ読む。そんな風にして気長に付き合っていきたい。日本語で読んだときには気付かなかった視点・考え方にはっとすることが多い。
