No―――Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and shortwinded elations of men.

We shook hands and I started away. Just before I reached the hedge I remembered something and turned around.
"They're a rotten crowd," I shouted across the lawn. "You're worth the whole damn bunch put together."

アメリカ文学の代表作のひとつ。今更僕が語るまでもない有名な小説ですが、人間の夢や想いに対する儚さ、虚しさの表現の傑出っぷり、そこから来るだろう切ない読後感、僕は好きです。

ギャツビーの「美しい破滅」的生きかた、物事に対する病的な執念を含んだ感覚や身のこなし、話しかた…等、まさに村上春樹文学の原点を見る思いです。

複雑な感じ。自分の体験とすこしばかり照らし合わせながら読んでしまった。キラキラしているイメージともやもやしているイメージが伝わってくる。光と闇のようなコントラストが、綺麗かもしれない。お話の根本自体は、多分きっと普遍的なものだと思う。単なるハートが盛りだくさんの恋愛小説には無い、恋愛に追纏う苦悩というか焦燥というかそんな何かが読み人の心につきささってくるのかもしれない、そんな一冊。村上春樹が翻訳したことで再熱されたらしいが、オリジナルで読んでみるのもオツだと思う。

謎の金持ちギャツビーをめぐる長編小説です。英文も古い文体で、やや読みにくい部分もあります。英語力が不足しているとかなり大変かも。出だしは非常に難しい部分ですが、物語自体はすごく面白いです。ギャツビーの秘密がだんだん見えてきます。複雑な人間関係も見所。主人公はニックですが、彼はやや傍観者的な立場の主人公です。
