ビフの部屋のカーペットには大きな穴。お父さんに見せるも、新しいものを買ってあげる余裕がないと言われてしまいます。キッパーの本棚を買うため、お父さんはビフとチップを連れてリサイクルショップに行きます。そこでビフは赤いカーペットを見つけ、買ってもらいます。ビフとキッパーがカーペットの上で本を読んでいると、魔法の鍵が輝き出し……。

囚われた王様と、逃げ落ちた彼の母と兵士たち。悪巧みして民を苦しめる王様のおじ。短い話でありながらも、それぞれの思いがたくさん詰まっていました。空飛ぶ絨毯があったら乗ってみたいです。

9歳息子と読了。

空飛ぶ絨毯で冒険する、という夢いっぱいのワクワクするお話。
しかもその冒険先で塔に囚われている少年王を助ける、という超盛り上がる展開。
ストーリー自体が面白いのはもちろん、冒険先が中東らしく、建物や衣服の描写も興味深い。
それと面白かったのがビフがこの絨毯を手に入れるくだり。
ビフの部屋の絨毯がくたびれてしまったけれど、新しいのを買う予算がない。。。ということでビフが中古のお店で古くて汚い絨毯を探し出す。これなら、ということでパパが買ってくれたものの、すっごく汚れていて使えそうにない。
そこでビフはあれやこれやと手をかけて絨毯をクリーニングする。クリーニングすると見違えるように美しくて立派な絨毯になる。
日本ではそもそもこんな中古の物を売ってるお店が少ないというのもあるけど、小学生の女の子が古い絨毯を欲しいと言い出すことなんてないだろう。
古いものを大切に使っていく、というイギリスの文化を垣間見た気がした。

アラブの王国での冒険。
マジック・キーを登場させたのは、イギリスの一般家庭じゃなかなか縁がないような文化を登場させるためなんだろうな。
