非常にインパクトの大きい一冊でした。crisisを乗り越えるための12のファクター（元来、個人に対するcrisis therapyで特定されたもの）を用いて、各国のcrisis（フィンランドの対ソ戦争、日本の明治維新、チリのクーデタもピノチェト時代、インドネシアの大量虐殺とスハルト時代、戦後ドイツ、オーストラリア）とその結果を検証し、現在進行中のcrisis（日本、米国、世界）の行方を分析するもの。これを読んでいる最中に入院を経験し、読み終わった後、新型コロナ危機が到来しました。今こそこの本に学ぶところが多くあると思います。

個人レベルの危機をどのように乗り越えるのか？
その秘訣は？
それは国家においても同じことなのではないか？

国家ということで、フィンランド、日本、チリ、インドネシア、ドイツ、オーストラリアを採り上げ、過去の危機をどのように乗り越えたか分析している。
日本は明治維新の対応がポジティブに評価されている一方、現在、日本が抱える問題点についても述べられている。負債、人口減少、移民、女性、戦後総括欠如等、全体として多くの紙面が割かれており興味深い。

また、後半は、米国の問題、世界レベルでの課題についても整理がされている。
何れも歴史に関する深い造詣から導きだされた考察であり、説得力あり。
