統計的自然言語処理の代表的な教科書。自然言語処理の網羅的な教科書として他にはAllenによるもの、近年ではJurafskyらによるものがあったが、それらと比べると特に統計的アプローチに焦点をあて平易かつ網羅的な記述がなされている点に特色がある。分量も適当で（Jurafskyのものは入門としては分量が多い）、研究室での輪講から独学まで幅広く用いることができよう。自然言語処理分野に足を踏み入れようとする学生、駆け出しの研究者へは本書を隅から隅まで熟読することを薦めたい。
