The narrative structure of ‘Lunar Park’ is much like traditional novels. It starts with unrelated mysterious incidents, culminates in horror movie-like middle and then finishes with fuzzy, feel-good ending. In this sense, it is already boring for Ellis readers who have certain expectations. What I like about his other works, Ellis’ unique voice and style, but in ‘Lunar Park’, these are buried amongst a cheap Hollywood film narrative with thin characters. I don’t know what made Ellis write soppy reconciliations of dysfunctional families over two generations, too banal a theme.
Ellis gives his own name to the protagonist. That may have provided him with some joy while writing, but for readers, it achieves nothing. One cannot call this meta-fiction as the duality is not working. Having read ‘Lunar Park’, I am now convinced that Ellis is a writer of senses and aesthetics, not intellect. Indeed, images in this novel are powerful and beautiful and reminded me of some of David Lynch’s films. While mysterious and unresolved events in Lynch’s films are convincing, in ‘Lunar Park’ they struck me as a writer’s whim.詳細をみるコメント0件をすべて表示
