あぁ長かった。これが第一声か。学生時代に読んでたら、V.C.Andrewsとか好きで読んでたから、楽しんだろう。一風変わった、自分の親代わりになってくれた祖母が亡くなって、遺言でイギリスにあるコテージを残してくれた。オーストラリアから出たことないと思ってた祖母の過去とは。意地悪な叔母、名のある一族の秘密、秘密の庭へと続く道。少女チックな魅力いっぱい。これ、映画にしたら、そりゃ美しく妖しい世界だろうなぁ。観てみたい。

英国からオーストラリアに到着した客船の中に何故か保護者が誰もいない幼女がいた。NELLと名付けられた彼女がやがて自分の生い立ちの秘密を探し出そうとするが・・・。NELLの両親、NELL自身、NELLの孫カサンドラという３世代の人々によって描かれる物語。「NELLは何者？」という謎解きの観点からだとかなり早い段階で予想がつき物足りない。バーネットの「秘密の花園」のオマージュでもある作品。
