アメリカ人で日本研究者のJohn W. Dowerによる本です。終戦直後の人々の生活、政治、社会が描かれています。
終戦を期に軍が指導する社会から、急速に民主化がもたらされ、日本国憲法が成立し、どにように日本人がそれを受け入れていったか分かります。

言わずと知れたピューリッツァ賞受賞作品。
じつは論文を書く際に教授から借りたのだが、原書しかもっていなかったというトンデモエピソードがあったりしたが、四苦八苦の末読めたのは面白かったからに他ならない。
個人的に一番興味を抱いたのが憲法制定までの紆余曲折だ。民主的な憲法制定を言い渡されたのに起草されたのは明治憲法と大差がないものだったという当時の天皇の絶対性。「国体」などの日本独自のシステムに困惑する占領軍陣営。そして彼らが示したお手本を一つ一つ和訳する日本の政治家や専門家の四苦八苦。気の遠くなるような和訳と英訳の繰り返しを通し、完成された憲法と、玉音放送に泣く政治家たち。相いれないしそうとは言え教科書では得られない血の通った彼らに対面できる貴重な一冊。

英語の勉強のために高校生の時に購入。
いきなり、分厚すぎでしょう。
ないようも重すぎ。
高校生らしい選択だとおもう。

もっと、薄い童話からはじめれば良かったのに。
当然、読んですらいない。

日本の終戦〜戦後1950年代までの内容なので、予備知識があれば英文であっても読みやすいです。
