Sarah, Plain and Tallシリーズを書いた作者の別作品です。

夏の観光地？避暑地？に住む一家のところにSophieという赤ちゃんが、いつか迎えに行くとう彼女の母親からの紙と共に置き去りにされます。
PapaはSophieを愛しすぎないようにしようと言いますが・・・


Sophieが置き去りにされた以外は大きな出来事はなく進みます。事情があったとはいえ、Larkinの両親にはもうちょっと彼女を見てて欲しかった。
個人的にはSarahシリーズのほうが好きです。

とても美しくて、感動的なお話でした。

Larkin一家が置き去りにされていた赤ちゃんを見つけます。
置き手紙があって、必ず迎えにくると。
Larkin一家はその赤ちゃんを預かることにしました。
いつか別れの日が来ることがわかっているから、その日がつらくなるからその赤ちゃんを愛さないようにしようと決めるのです。

Larkin一家には悲しい経験がありました。
この赤ちゃんと過ごすことで、心の痛みを思い出しますが、同時にその痛みが癒されていきます。

読後感はじんわり暖かい感動に包まれます。

I finished reading "Baby" in English a couple of days ago. To tell you the truth, this is my second book in English this year. I guess some of my friends remember my New Year's resolution. This year I decided to read forty eight books in English. However, I am still reading my third book right now. I definitely have to push myself more.

This book "Baby" is written by my favorite American author for children books, Patricia Maclachlan. I read her five books already. This is my sixth book of her. I like her books because most of stories are full of love. I also like her writing style because it is very poetic. The book is also very poetic and beautiful. The story is filled with love and tender. I really enjoyed reading it. I realized that I was in a kindly mood after reading it.

文章がとても美しく、ときどきその美しい表現を読み返し、そしてときどき涙がにじんでくる。
そして情景がやさしく浮かんできます。
胸にジーンと沁みてくるような物語でその表現スタイルはすてき。


ある夏の終わりの日、Larkinの家族はそのBabyに出会う。一緒にあった紙切れに書いてあった言葉とともに。
「この子はSophieです。もうすぐ１歳でいい子です。いつかこの子を迎えに来ます。この子を愛しています。」

Larkinの家族はこの子を連れて帰り世話をすることになる。Larkinのお父さんは彼女に言う、この子を愛しちゃだめだって。でも彼女のお父さんもお母さんもおばあちゃんも、Sophieを愛さずにはいられなかった。

読後感しみじみ〜のお話でした。
タイトルそのままに、ある一家のポーチに赤ちゃんが置き去りにされていた所からお話は始まります｡必ず迎えにくる、というママの置き手紙がそえられていました。一家のパパは「好きになってもいいけれど、愛してはいけない」と言います｡愛する者を失うことが以下につらいか、身をもって経験しているからこそ、思いを注ぎ過ぎないようにしよう、そんな切ない気持ちが表れてくる言葉です｡後は読んでのお楽しみ。
