Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions.
A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.

一般相対論とペンローズ・ホーキングの特異点定理についての本です。
一般相対論についてはエッセンスだけを述べて、あとは時空の因果構造、初期値問題や特異点定理への証明に当てられています。
学生の時の輪講でみんなで読みました。
ただかなり細かく議論しながらだったので、途中で時間切れとなってしまいました。もう一度読んでみたいと思います。

　私は、大学１回生の時、背伸びをして一般相対性理論を勉強していて、いつの間にか
「物理学というものも難しくなってくると、完璧には理解できないものなのではないか？」
という疑念を持つようになってしまいました。
「一般相対性理論を完璧に理解することは出来ないのではないか？」
　日本語の一般相対性理論の本は、ほとんど目を通しましたが、分かりませんでした。
　そんな時、この本に出会ったのです。
　見事な微分幾何の説明。完璧なまでに数学的に厳密な証明。曖昧さのない記述。
　圧倒されました。
　現在、私が物理をやっていられるのは、この本のお陰です。
　私の愛読書ナンバー１です。
