Last week I finished reading "The Shop on Blossom Street". It is one of my most favorite books, and Debbie Macomer is one of my most favorite authors. Right now I'm reading volume 2 of blossom Street series. The series has five books. I want to read all of them. I also would like to read her other series.

After I finish reading "The Shop on Blossom Street", I felt the confident that I can read books written for adults. The book has over four hundred pages, and it was my first time to complete reading such a thick paperback in English without using a dictionary.

In the story there are four women, and each woman has some troubles with their lives. I guess while you are reading, you might tend to put yourself into the characters' lives in the story without thinking. Since each woman is very attractive, you would feel sympathies to them. They meet at a knitting class which one of them runs on the Blossom Street, and they come to get along with each other through the knitting class. Since I also love knitting, I wanted to start to knit as well. They help and support each other, and then they finally find happy in their life. The ending of the story was splendid! The story is rich of wits. I can tell you that readers never get bored to read. I highly recommend the book to all women.

Since the author's books are easy for me to read without using a dictionary, I would love to read all her paperbacks in English to improve my reading comprehension.
I'm very happy I could meet this book!

4人の書き分けが…各人で違うのは境遇ぐらいで、考え方とか人格はほぼ同一な感じがした。なので、4人を同時並行で進めつつ物語がこんがらがらないようにする手腕はすごいと思ったが、話の面白さとしては「これはすごい！」と手放しで絶賛する気にはなれなかった。
結末もちょっとうまく行き過ぎというか…さすが、「フランダースの犬」のラストを、『アロアの父さんが改心してネロを助けに来る』というハッピーエンドに変えてしまうアメリカ…と感じた。
後味は悪くないけど、格別感動もできなかった。

Jacqueline が、ケネディ夫人の登場で小5のときに名前のスペルを変えた、とか、Alix が r ではなく l で綴ることについて、おそらく母親が出生証明書を出すときに酔っていて間違えたんだろう、と Alix 本人は考えていること、息子の妻 Tammie Lee に対して Jacqueline がなぜ南部の人は名前が2つもあるの、と難癖をつけるところなど、向こうの名前事情が興味深かった。
ちなみに Jacqueline のスペルは Jacquelyn, Jaclyn, Jacklyn, Jacklyne, Jaklin, Jacqlyn, Jacquelin, Jackeline, Jacklin, and Jackelyn と、こんだけあるそうだ。。（英語版Wikipediaより）

一番感情移入したのは Alix。他人を信じることができたかどうかが、Laurel との運命の分かれ目だったのだなぁという気がしてならない。

She'd been on her own since she was sixteen and one of the hardest lessons life taught her was that the only person she could rely on was herself. It wasn't a lesson she was likely to forget.

Since she'd come this far, she might as well go for broke. "There's more," she announced with a much dignity as she could muster.

女性向けの小説。

癌の闘病生活を経て退院した主人公が毛糸店を開き
編み物教室を始めるところから物語はスタートする。

そこに、職業も性格も年齢もバラバラな３人が集まり
それぞれ抱える悩みにロマンスの要素も加わって
ストーリィが展開していく。

恋人／夫との関係、出産、不妊治療、嫁姑など
どの年代の女性にもどこか共感をえられるように
何遍無くトピックがふられている。

話の展開も現実的ながら、どこか救いがあって
読み終わったあとは明るい気持ちになる。

がんを乗り越えて毛糸屋さんを開いたリディア。そして、3人の女性たちが編み物教室の生徒として集まる。

妊娠したばかりの義理の娘とうまくいかないジャクリーン。子供がほしいが、なかなかできない元キャリアウーマンのキャロル。そして問題を抱える若いアリックス。それぞれの物語が1章ずつ交差する。

途中から止まらなくなった。平易な英語だが、女性の心理が手に取るように分かる。それぞれが臆病だったり、恋に落ちたり。最後はハッピーエンドでめでたしめでたし。

気軽によめるお話です。洋書入門にはいいと思うけど、あくまで女性向けですね・・・。
