哲学的な話も入ったSF短編集。正直話はそこまで深くない。ただこれらは近い将来実際に起こり得る出来事なんだろうなと思った。

SF短編集。流行りのAIやアバターなどを扱った話が多い。作者はかなり専門知識を備えているようである。ストーリー性や、各編の展開は今ひとつだった気がする。

Exhalation is not just a conventional science fiction that depicts inventive future world. The settings are indeed enticing, but what’s truly extraordinary about Chiang’s work is the implications he tried to convey and the ingenious way he presented them.
The stories are elaborately reflective and philosophical, almost spiritual. Each story raises a question on a theme (free will, parenting, inevitability etc.) which the characters seek and suggest their answers to it at the end.
The book has the power of invoking readers to contemplate on concepts which we’ve all encountered but never really gave much deep thoughts to. Just as the protagonist of “The Alchemist’s Gate” states at the beginning, they can be “lessons to those who would learn”.
