重いストーリーだけど、アフガンの現実と人間の本質も考えさせられた。読んで良かった。

読了
哀しくも美しい物語だった。1つ前の章でやめるつもりが、あまりに衝撃的すぎてやめることができなかった。この物語はアミールの償いと成長のドラマなのかもしれない。

偉大な父の元で育ったアミール、痛々しいほど父の愛を求めた少年時代。父に認められた人生最大の日に悲劇はおこり、そこから彼の葛藤が始まる。

舞台はアフガニスタン、アメリカ、パキスタンと史実を交えながら進む。偉大だと思っていた父には大きな秘密があった。その秘密からアミールの人生の新しいステージが始まる。

空に舞う凧、このタイトル。意味深い。

5年前に読んだときに途中で挫折した本をこうして感動とともに読了でき、私自身の成長も感じることができました。

話の舞台がアメリカに移ったところで一度どうしても読み進まなくなってしまったのですが、読んでよかったと思える本でした。私は世代的に「事が起きた」後のアフガニスタンしか知らないのですが、報道される前の古き良きアフガニスタン、でもそこに存在する悲しい差別、今もそこに住むたくさんの善良な人々、などなどの姿を見られたことが大きかった。そして災禍を受けた子供（だけではないが）の心がどれだけぎりぎりの綱渡りであるか。償いと愛の形、など多くを考えさせられるのに大衆小説としての構成を損なわずそこにもまた作者の想いを感じる。

It's a story about the atonement of an Afghan American man, Amir, whose life was engulfed by the tide of history and the secrets behind his family and his own sins.

↓Spoiler Alert (by the way, I've learned that this is pretty much an American, or at least not Afghan, way of caring for others by reading this story.)↓

I assume the monster in the lake in Hassan's dream is a metaphor for the obstacles to his friendship with Amir: the differences in their ethnicities, religions, and social classes. But he had believed all those things, like the monster in the lake, only exist in the minds of adults and have nothing to do with them. Unfortunately, those things turned out to be significant to Amir and ended up breaking their friendship for good. I guess although most people have a favorable impression of Hassan, who is pure, compassionate, and brave, they feel more sympathy for Amir, who is cowardice, self-centered, and a little bit cruel. It is hard for us to always be as strong as we wish to be. We often make wrong choices because of our weaknesses, and later regret them and try to compensate, which is usually too late. For Amir, it was also too late, but not completely: He could save Hassan's child.

The ending of this story is not a totally “happily ever after,” but it shows a slightly positive sign that makes us expect things will work out for the better.

Absolutely a great story to read, and the words of Hassan and Amir are still echoing in my mind: “For you, a thousand times over”
