ペルシア戦争の「テルモピュライの戦い」をテーマにした漫画。著者は「バットマン」「シンシティ」の原作者であり、したがって英文。
スパルタ王レオニダスという人物の、「男としての、スパルタ人としての生き様」を描いたもの。
スパルタ側、ペルシア側ともに、映画よりは人間的で、落ち着いた描写である――というより、映画がアメリカ映画すぎる。
歴史好きが読む分には、少し物足りないかもしれない。
個人的にも、ヘロドトスも賞賛したテスピアイの勇敢さが閑却されており残念だが、スパルタを主眼にしたものである為仕方ないだろう。
逆に、この時代の予備知識がない人には、スパルタ人のあり方の本質を突いた著作であり、映画よりは漫画を薦めたい。
語彙は平易で、アメコミの雰囲気を理解しながら楽しむ本としても適切。
25×30センチで、非常にでかい。
