  • I wanna comment Kyouka’s works passage by passage, since Ms Chiehjo Wen’s translation is also just selected from Iwanami’s version.
‘Surgical Department’ and ‘Pipa’s story’ both echo their narratives so as to create a romantic chain, while others pitifully do not stand out; for ‘Sleepy Watchman’, from my view it shares a common genre named ‘telling story’ with stories like Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, where the readers are viewed at the same level with criminals so as to enhance irony, and the end of it sprays some ghostly elements as the watchman(narrator) cut down his words with a smile. The similar structure as a framework like this can be found in ‘Koyahijiri’(高野聖) while that is more skillful; both of the stories induce readers’ focusing on the clarified narrator, then arouse our eyes through their images to seek some invisible information suggesting the secrets of human nature (vs god nature).
My most appreciated should be ‘Yushimamoude’(湯島詣), whose title can be interpreted as a pilgrimage about love to Yushima. The progress of style of this work is analogous to Joyce’s ‘Portrait’: multiple scenes of Azusa and his geisha-lover are frozen in frames to bloom a sense of sentimental regrets just like being salvaging, so as to string the up-side-down narratives as a novel chain, which shows the strong and kind heart within the two protagonists who once dashed together among the ancient town streets without any loss of styles; the general style mentioned above ensures the fiction to be the best one in Kyouka’s era.
The image of ‘geisha’ may be transformed from Kyouka to Yasunari (see more in his ‘Snow Country’); I’ve once heard some critiques hold an opinion that Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima and even Ton Satomi took in Kyouka’s literary heritages.
An interesting example for Japanese homonym can be found in this work: ‘hana’ refers to flowers and also noses, which reminds me of Lawrence Sterne’s biological jokes.
What’s more, the lunatic suicide in the end is a little similar to Hardy’s ‘The Return to the Native’ (mainly Eustacia Vye beneath the storm), while Azusa’s acts are more moving than that from my pov, since Eustacia’s acts are full of ironic aggressions.
The beginning part of the work is high in density of narration, thus the speed is slow, with a deep space of that old era generated, with an emotional style; while on the contrary when it comes to the part near the end, the emotional style starts to be purely with unbelievable intensity, as the plots and images have been torn away: all the narratives come to be united and then accelerated, just stimulating our dancing heart.
Though the collection of chn translation is titled as ‘Koyahijiri’, the passage itself seems like lack of arts, except the metaphorical desires of youkai, the alarming precepts of pantheism and the God’s telling through the narrator as a monk from Mt Koya; but even so we still can pay a closer reading, for example, focusing on the lady chosen by God: her masquerade identity and youkai mysteries — how did Kyouka organised them with his ambiguous and risk-reminding language? Maybe we can scrutinise them especially through the scene where the monk and the lady bathed together.
