This book is comprised of many magazine articles which ordinary Indians read such as Outlook and India Today. The book aims at to get a real picture of what Indians are thinking and feeling through reading those popular magazines.

The topics of articles range from buying behavior and movie making to marriage, religion, and education. The author concludes this compilation with his own observation of change in Indian society by driving a car from Delhi to north on Route 1 up to Panjabi.

What impressed me by reading the articles was the fact that Indians are now enjoying almost the same life-style as many Westerners do in richer countries, at least as far as middle and upper social segments are concerned. Many rich families are now lining in “gated” towns which is isolated from poor areas. Kids living there has no chance to observe poor neighbors. Those rich families do shopping in shopping malls, almost the same ones we can find in western countries and pay a lot of attention to “healthy” foods (with a lot of chemical ingredients) and go to an athletic club. Some even feel nostalgia in antique furniture and objects and spend a lot of money to buy them, though they can be what poor Indians in poor areas can be still using in their houses.

Young people are beginning to use Internet to find their partners (traditionally their parents arrange marriage) and many feel keeping good appearance is importance and are willing to spend money in cosmetics.

I have never been to India but I can imagine what sort of change they are now going through. When I went to Thailand, for instance, for the first time more than 2 decades ago, Bangkok has no monorail and the city spread very wide. Though it was very modern city, it had its own atmosphere even in a most fashionable area. I once visited Bangkok after the monorail was constructed, and I could feel, in spite of becoming much more convenient, the city lost much of its taste and was getting like one of the many “cities” (which is more or less very similar)

I think the author was very successful in describing how Indians, though they might be getting wealthier in momentary terns, have a feeling of a sort of insecurity. Many young people commit suicide with a heavy pressure of succeeding in school and many older people go on a pilgrim trips (in a air conditioned bus, though). Conflicts between Hindu and Islam is ever continuing.

The author ends this book with the sentence “ Agony is Globalizing”

インドは急激に近代化している。その象徴として「ゲートで外の世界と隔絶された高級住宅街」「健康ブームで人気のヘルシーな加工食品, フィットネスクラブのヨガ教室」「リゾートホテル付きの巡礼ツアー」「経済的に豊かになった若者に増えている自殺」「宗教とは別に需要のあるスピリチュアルブーム」などが紹介されている。
一般的な日本人がインドに対して持っているイメージとは大きくかけ離れている。著者によれば、「我々日本人とほとんど変わらない苦悩を抱えて、インドの中間層は生きているのである」。
本書はとても読みやすく、現代インドのリアルな一側面を知るには格好の書であると思う。

インドも現代化してるみたい。
ゲーテッドコミュニティはインドであってインドでない。
道にｺﾞﾐを棄てるような人もいなければ、噛みタバコを吐き出す人もいなく、もしそのようなことをしてる人がいれば追放らしい。
まるでシンガポールのようなのだという。
このマンションではインドで日常の停電や個人で水の給水をしなくてもよいらしい。
セキュリティも万全。
いろんな意味でインドであってインドでないのがゲーテッドコミュニティ。
その他にも、インド人の現代結婚観や、教育のことが書いてあり、興味深かった。

その国の人々が実際に感じている問題点、危機感などがよくわかって
とてもおもしろかった。

インド好きなので、図書館の新着棚を見て借りた。私の知っているインドはかわってしまった。と思いました。発展するとそれもそれで問題ありですね。
