月明かりの晩、きつねのとうさんが村のこやへ出かけます。家族にごちそうを持って帰るために…。ピーター・スピアが、古くからある歌に想像力豊かな絵をつけたもの。ところが、絵のなかの文字がすべて日本語で書き直されています。訳すだけならまだしも、墓碑銘などが日本人の名前に書き換えられているのです。ここはスピアが工夫をこらした場所のはず。見るたびに腹が立ちます。

父さん狐が寒い晩に村へ行くお話です。
始めの方は村で餌となる鴨や家鴨を捕まえようとしていたので、
何でこんな騒動を起こすのか不思議に、また嫌な感じを抱いていました。
ですが、最後の方は銃を持った村人に追いかけられるも、逃げて逃げて家へ辿り着き、子狐達の為にと解った途端、
先に書いた感情は消え失せ、逆に感動しました。

ニューイングランド地方の民謡を絵本にしたもの。
ロンドン橋と同じパターンかな。
墓碑銘などは、きっとアメリカの作家の名前が書かれていて、それにそうとうするくらいの人物の名前に変えられているのだと思う。
遊び心はきっとスピアーも理解するところだと思う。

『ノアのはこ船』（邦訳：評論社）で1978年コールデコット賞、および『きつねのとうさん ごちそうとった』（邦訳：評論社）で1962年コールデコット・オナー賞を受賞した、アメリカで最も人気ある著名なイラストレーターの1人。100冊を超える本のイラストを担当し、その仕事はアメリカ中の美術館や私的コレクションに見られる。イラストと文筆に加えて、船舶模型の熱心かつ名高い制作者でもある。2017年死去。
