　　　Knife
　かつて受験生時代，「手術を受ける」というのは英語ではsubmit oneself under the knifeと表現すると教わり，knife １語がカバーする語義の広さに驚いたことを覚えている。英語でも「鉈｣，｢斧｣，「鎌」など大型の刃物は, hatchet, ax(e), sickleのようにそれぞれ別の語を使うが，「短刀｣，「短剣｣，「匕首〔あいくち〕｣，「ドス｣，｢包丁｣，「小刀｣，「メス｣，「果物ナイフ｣，「（鉛筆などを削る）肥後守｣，「菜切り｣,「牛刀｣，「出刃｣,「ジャックナイフ」などがすべて knife １語ですむというのは，ちょっと信じられないくらいだ。
　ただし，日本語では「刃物」一つでもこのように細分化している―→したがって料理などに対する日本人の感性は豊かだ―→つまり日本人はそれだけ細やかな神経を持った優れた国民である…といった短絡的な考え方は禁物。その反対例はいくらもあるからだ。（ドイツ語には「痛い」を表す言葉が日本語と比べものにならないくらいたくさんある―――と森鴎外がすでに明治時代に言っている｡）

著者が翻訳済みの書籍を読むときに気づいた誤訳をまとめた書籍。
丁寧に時間をかけて作られていると思います。
大学の英語の授業で使っている書籍の誤訳が多いみたいで、
私が行っている技術英語の翻訳に役立つか？は未知な部分もあると思います。
翻訳をよくする人は手元にあるとよいのでしょう。
