A Japanese language version was published recently and it is getting a good reputation in a newspaper review. I could borrow it from a a library easily. It looks not so many people are interested in this sort of book even with a good words in a newspaper.
The book was so interesting to me and I could read it all at once. It was very relevant readings after Work and Learning module in ALGC module.
Since the book was written more than a decade ago and probably the authors referred to only English resources, I could find some misunderstanding/oversimplification or lack of background knowledge in descriptions on Japanese situations (e.g. a sense of belonging to school, where the authors neglected a huge significance of extra school cram schools or “juku” in Japanese education and little expectation of parents/kids for formal schooling). In general, however, the authors could place Japanese situation in comparison with Western countries in a very interesting way.
I don't have an original English book and only read a Japanese translation so some of the terms have to be checked against the original book (What is Kindai Kouki in English? )
In essence the book sounds to argue that moving from young age to adulthood (school to workplace) became a very complex process as well as a long process and shared experience young people used to have is now fragmented and individualized. As a consequence, their sense of belonging to a certain social /work group became weak and they tend to think the risk/responsibility of success/failure is dependent of their endeavors. With uncertain work prospective, they are growing a sense of uncertainties. Also class, gender, and ethnicity still matter a lot in their life prospective, which is covered with a motto of “Jiko Sekinin” (self-responsibility).
Several years ago a movie which depicted ordinary people's lives in Tokyo in 1960s got a large audience, not only someone like me who spent a childhood in that period, but also young people who never know the area. Probably what attracted young people can be unconscious adoration of those stable periods where people could know what kind of life they could lead, often a better life than his parents.
Let's consider to buy an English version or Japanese version, second hand after a while.
