First of all, this is so different from the film, starring J. Binoche and J. Depp, that I didn't even notice it was the original at first--as oftenly happens between a film and its original.
As for the story itself, it strikes me that the author succeeded to describe how people think and feel in their various relations in a conservative old village in France. Sometimes insightful, sometimes humorous.
On the other hand, sometimes the flow of the story is interrupted by so many French words and phrases, as I haven't studied French.
Overall, very enjoyable novel, which I totally absorbed in for several days.
