様々な実験やアンケートで判明する、「選択」にまつわる意外な事実の数々。これを斜め読みするだけでも十分楽しめる。章立ての順序に特に意味はないようなので、好きな箇所から読み進められる。啓蒙書というよりはエッセイに近く、使われている語彙もさほど難しくはないが、若干文章が堅苦しく感じられた。

・恋愛/見合い結婚と自己/集団主義のシンクロシニティ
・アップルの戦略と「自分だけがユニーク」という思い込み
・サンタクロースとコカ・コーラの意外な関係
・生命維持装置解除を医師の判断に任せるべきか？

などなど、興奮するほどの驚きはなくとも、扱われる話題の幅広さに感心すること請け合い。選択の自由を重んじるアメリカの対極に立てやすいからか、日本の登場する頻度が高いのも面白い。

まとめ
決定権がある方が、人は幸せである。動物園の動物を見てもわかるように、それが生きやすいかどうかに関わらず、自分で選んだ道の方が幸せである。

と、書いてあるのに…？

お見合い結婚なんて想像もつかないが、一昔前までは多くがそうで、お見合いだとさぞかしやる気も出ず、不幸で、悲しいかと思いきや、全然。むしろ恋愛結婚よりそういう値が低かった！それは、文化の違いで、はなからそういうもんであると思っている人は、別にその権利が無くても平気なのである。

そりゃーそうだろう。

恋愛結婚のほうが初期の愛情は多いが、降下の一途を辿るし、後にお見合い結婚のだんだん育まれる愛情が勝つらしい。

んで、アメリカで産まれたウエスタンピーポーは、決定権が与えられるとやる気出ると。シリアルからキャリアまで、全部自分中心に、自分がいいと思う物を選ぶのが幸せだから。

でもアジアや南米の人は、決定権が委ねられると、狼狽し、上司が仕事をしてないと思う、と。それは親や偉い人の決定した物を最上に高める事を最高とし、グループ全体の向上を目指す文化だから。

で？

結論に書いてあるのはイマイチ。なんの結論でもないじゃないか！と。色々バイアスとかあるし気をつけてね～みたいな。んなもんわかっとるわ。

という事でダメ本でした。

A great book about why we make difference decision. And how do we make it.

More importantly, base on what principle or reason we make such choice, had been the main learning I had from this book.

Also the part about the job hunter who spend less time, had earn less, however, with a higher satisfaction.

Sheena is the one create the famous jam tasting test, that proven Less is more.

「コロンビア白熱教室（選択の科学）」の原書。NHKの番組（コロンビア大学MBAのクラスを紹介したもの）がとても良い内容だったので、原書にチャレンジしてみたいと思った。
