What are the characteristics of translation? What traps and pitfalls one has to avoid in translation practice? What is the difference between translation and interpreting? What is the relationship between translation and teaching foreign languages? What research has been done in Machine Translation? The Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies addresses these and many other questions. Over 100 researchers from all over the world have contributed to this volume allowing readers to get a basic knowledge of current scholarship in the field of translation.
This volume has undergone two editions embracing new areas, such as Gender and Sexuality, Globalization and Cultural Translation, and discussing technological developments that stimulated Corpus-based studies
and Computer-Aided Translation.
To reflect and organize the diversity of material, the editors - Mona Baker, Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Manchester, UK, and Gabriela Saldanha, Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK - have chosen two-part structure. The first section includes articles on subjects ranging from Advertising and Comics to Postcolonial and Sociological approaches to translation. The second part
of this volume looks in detail at different national translation traditions, thus avoiding an exclusively Eurocentric perspective and introducing translation studies of China, Africa, the Middle East and many other geographical regions.
Being written in a simple and clear manner it contains a wealth of references to the literature of translation studies. I believe that this volume will become a desk companion not only for those students who started making their way to the translation and second language acquisition studies but also for anyone struggling with learning a foreign language.
