WillとLou、2人が少しずつ仲良くなって行くところは好きだったのだけど、終わりはあっけなかったと思う。最後のWillからの手紙も、Louの存在を "It's not enough for me. " とWillが言い切ったのと同じように、「一人残された者が救われるには不十分」と思った。

p. 239で "Best before: 19 March 2007" とタトゥを彫った時点で、ああ無理なんだろうな、と思った。四肢不随なだけでなく、感染症や絶え間ない投薬、体の痛みなど、生きるだけで苦しいのだということが何回も何回も描写されていたし。

AB(abled-body)の人間にその選択に至るまでの絶望や苦痛を想像することはできない。"It's not your choice. It's my choice." という言葉が、Louをなぐさめるために何度も出てきたのが印象的だった。


イギリス英語なのでblokeやbloodyが頻繁に出てきた。

"He likes her. I'm sure he likes her. We were talking while watching the news the other night, and he mentioned her twice. He hasn't done that before."
"Yes. Well. I wouldn't get your hopes up."
→ get one's hopes up 期待しすぎない方がいい。

p. 279 Alicia sounded so frustrated when she realized as weren't actually declining the invitation that it dawned on me that her embossed correspondence really had been for appearance's sake.
