ベイトソンは後の時代から見れば今世紀最大の認識論者と称されても過言ではないくらい広大で先験的な認識をもっていた人です。あまり知られてはいませんが、ベイトソンは、60年代ウーマンリブ運動の先駆者であったマーガレットミードのhusbandです。本書は、彼の論文集の集大成であり、ほとんどすべての彼の哲学を実際に「習得できる」優れた本です。この本は90年に改訂されて以来バブルの影響で長らく手にいれることができなく、私自信も再販を待ち望んでいました。一読するとわかりますが、日常のちょっとした思考について、人類史をも揺るがす深い認識の転換を迫る本です。例えば、情報、ユーモア、コミュニケーション、遊びなど馴染みのある概念が、実は背後にある深遠な哲学的認識の対象となりえるだけでなく、それが実際に思考習慣として身につく本であると思います。
