主専で読んだ。当時は意味不明すぎて、こんなテキスト燃えてなくなればいいと思ってました。でも、すっごく、大事なことを伝えている、学問上においても歴史上においても、すっごく貴重な一冊でした。気付くのが遅かったよ、自分←
それはともかく、えーっと、英文でわかりにくいという場合は、これの訳本『レトリックと人生』から先に読んでみるといいと思います。このブクログは、主専に苦しむであろう英語科の未来の後輩たちに向けても書かれていたりするので、余計なお節介ですが続きます。「人生」という題名の意訳は、"we live by"な、メタファーのことを論じている本だからです。これが、本を通して、著者の伝えたいことだったりして、よく論展開の際に出てくる主張は、だいたいこれに基づいています。そういう本の流れを理解して読むと、ちょっとは、読みやすくなるかもしれない。

現在となっては、批判点ももちろんあるが、メタファー研究に大きな貢献を果たした論文。
この本がきっかけで、言語学を専攻することとなる。
