生化学一般の本としては、Lehninger と並ぶ双璧。

Molecular Biology of the Cell を読了した私は、「必須アミノ酸の生合成経路」を求めて、
図書館で生化学書あさりを始めた。
学部としては Stryer's biochemistry や Harper's biochemistry を推奨していたが、
これらの医学寄りの本は、「必須アミノ酸の生合成」のような、「人間がやっていない反応」の扱いは
ごく限られており、すぐに却下となった。
私を生化学の道へ引きずり込んでくれた Lehninger への思い入れは強かったが、
Voet のほうが反応機構の記述が細かい印象をうけ、Voet を選んだ。
（また、Lehninger のほうが 分子生物学の内容を多く含むように思われ、the Cell との重複を恐れたというのもある)

化学的記述が多く、内容的には文句なしの出来だったが、やや文章が読みにくいように感じられた。
それは当時、構造生物学の記述に不慣れで、そこでペースを崩されたからかもしれない。
今は、構造生物学の内容も含め、この本を愛用している。
