作者はアメリカ生まれアメリカ育ちであるが、韓国人のご両親に育てられたせいか、アジアの価値観、文化、風情が大変よく表現されている。これを読む純アメリカンの少年少女たちは、何を感じるだろう。興味深いところだ。本作はNewbery Medalの他、Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literatureの佳作にも選ばれている。
あらすじは一人の少年が有名な陶器作家に弟子入りし、職人としても人間としても成長していく様子が描かれている。少年を見守る大人たちの暖かさを感じる優しく逞しい作品。

From the beginning and up to the two-third, the story will move slowly. However, once the protagonist left the village to go to the palace, it was a quite exciting story.

This story is a historical fiction. And the protagonist, Tree-ear is orphaned and grow up in small village. He somehow started working for a potter, Min and made a friend, Crane-man.
This is about how Tree-ear feels about "family".

Since the setting was around twelfth century and this is Asian culture, I could not sometimes understand why people act or talk like that. Also, the author's note at the end is little weird since she talks about the skeptical history record between Japan and Korea. However, the ending was sort of happy ending.

力強い作品だった。苦境にも負けず、人としての誇りも、人への温かみも美しいものへの渇望も畏怖も抱き続け、ゆっくりと歩みを重ねていく主人公が尊く感じられる。そうした人の手から生まれることになる美しい一つの陶磁器。。。ずっと共に歩むCrane-manがまた魅力的で、その世界を読む目が生きる知恵に富み、私にも大きな栄養となった。

かなり退屈だった…。最後の3章で事件が色々起きるけど、そこまでは読むのがしんどかった。
あと、shardの意味を知らなかったが、知った今では、このタイトルがかなりネタバレというか、先の展開が読めてしまうタイトルだなぁと思った。

あと、12世紀のKoreaにmelonとかwineとかの単語が出てくるのに違和感があった。

これでNewbery賞かぁ…。該当作品なし、の年があってもいいんじゃないか？と思った。
