The story is divided into 3 parts spanning 3 different generations of a family set in the high mountains of Portgual. Each chapter unfolds a story of a man individually experiencing grief and loss of their loved ones, with an existence of an ape taking a huge role in their lives. The beginning is slow and may come as somewhat boring, but it gets better as you read through. Martel throws some comic reliefs here and there, so it's quite entertaining despite handling a rather heavy theme. However, I'm still having a hard time understanding the overall message this story is trying to convey. It seems like the key points were thrown about but never fully collected at the end to sum up the story.
