イギリスの植民都市シンガポールの形成過程のなかで、性を生業(なりわい)とする日本と中国の女性たちはいかに生き、死んでいったか。本書は、各種の植民地史料を掘り起こし、曖昧な聞き取り調査を文献や写真を使って裏づけ、近代という時代に翻弄されながらも懸命に生きた人びとのすがたを多角的な視野のもとに浮かび上がらせる。娼婦の生活史から日本とアジアの近代を問いなおす画期的研究。

著者プロフィール

（James Francis Warren）
1942年生まれ。オーストラリア国立大学Ph.D. 現在、マードック大学教授。研究分野は東南アジア民族史・社会史。2003年、Centenary Medal of Australia, 2013年、Grant Goodman Prize for Historical Studies受賞。
