学校の授業で読まなきゃで、読んでたんだけど面白かったから楽しんで読めた！
今回長めの小説を英語ではじめて、自分一人で読破したんだけど、まー時間がかかる！！笑
日本語なら2時間で読める分量だなって思うけど、英語だと一章一時間はかかった。
翻訳もされてるみたいだから、帰ったら翻訳のほうもよみたい。
映画もあってそれは今期の授業の最後にも見るらしいからたのしみ^_^

６０年代の南部アメリカ。幼少期に母親を失い、一向に愛を傾けてくれない父親と母親代わりの黒人ロザリーンと暮らす主人公のリリー。ある事件をきっかけに家を飛び出したリリーとロザリーンは、養蜂家の黒人三姉妹の下へと辿り着く。そこで彼女らと蜂達とゆったりとした時間を過ごす内に、主人公はひた隠しにされていた秘密や自分の心の深い傷と向き合っていく。とにかく美しい小説だった。人間の心情にスペクトルがあるとすれば、その内の全てが描写されていた気がする。孤独な人間が救われていく様に始終涙が止まらなかった。表紙の絵も息を呑む程美しい。

１４歳のLilyは粗野で冷酷な父親と暮らしていましたが、ある出来事を切っ掛けに家出をする決心をします。「亡くなったおまえの母親は、お前を捨てて出て行こうとしていた」という父親の冷たい言葉を信じられず、本当の事を知りたいと、わずかな手掛かりを元にある町へたどり着きます。そして養蜂をして生活している３姉妹の所に滞在する事になるのですが…。

母をなくした少女が、その面影を求めて一歩踏み出す。その一歩は、まだ差別の残る米国南部で、危なっかしく、でも自分に正直で勇気ある一歩だ。養蜂家の３姉妹が、とにかくとても温かい。

６０年代の米国南部、１４歳の白人少女リリーが、亡き母の遺品を手に父の家を飛び出すところから物語が始まる。黒人の養蜂家の３姉妹との出会いなどを通じて、リリーは大人に成長していく。
登場人物が魅力的、そして読後感がすばらしい。とってもオススメの作品です。

Very American South. As warm and sweet as honey but not treacly. And a little bit magical. And also poignantly female.
Lily is a white 14 year old girl in the American South at the time of the civil rights movement. When she was 4, she accidentally shot and killed her mother as she was packing to leave her husband. Lily now lives with an unkind father and a black servant/nanny called Rosaleen. When Rosaleen is arrested and beaten for spitting on the shoes of white men who don't like her registering to vote, Lily breaks her free and they make their way to a town whose name was scribbled on the back of a picture of a black Madonna, which is one of Lily's few mementos of her mother. It turns out this black Madonna is the symbol of three black sisters who keep bees, and they give Lily and Rosaleen a home, a magical haven with lots of love. August in particular teaches Lily not only about the secret life of bees, centered around the Queen Bee, but also that you make your own mother, and your own religion inside of yourself. The sisters have their own church called the Daughters of Mary and they have a strange but wonderful ritual involving a figure of a black Madonna, Our Lady in Chains. Because the book is told from the point of view of an imaginative young girl on the cusp of womanhood, it maintains a humorous innocence, and a sense of hope and wonder, through all the grief and pain.
