とてもかわいい本。

舞台はアフリカ。私立探偵業を営む女性と、彼女を取り巻く隣人の物語。もちろん色々事件や恋はおこるのだが、流れる時間がアフリカ時間なので、鬼気迫るようなことは何もない。

休みの日に、ゆったりとした気分でいたいとき、開く一冊。

バケーションでビーチで読むのも、最適。

I'm a just a tiny person in africa, but there is a place for me, and for everybody, to sit down on this earth and touch it and call it their own.

They would grow melons on the lands and might even buy a small shop in village; and every morning she could sit int front of her house and sniff at the wood-smoke and look forward to spending the day talking with her friends. How sorry she felt for white people, who couldn't do any of this, and who were always dashing around and worrying themselves over things that were going to happen anyway. What use was it having all that money if you could never sit still or just watch your cattle eating grass? None, in her view; none at all, and yet they did not know it. Every so often you met a white person who understood, who realised how things really were; but these people were few and far between and the other white people often treated them with suspicion.

おもしろかった！
児童文学…かな？わかりやすくて、さくさくっと進める。
ミステリーが好きで、探偵！と思って読んだんだけどミステリーじゃなかった。なんだろ、主人公の女探偵をとりまく人々も主人公になっている章があって、ふしぎ。お父さんの若いころの出稼ぎの話とか、となりの車修理屋さんのおはなしとか。そしてなぞはほとんど解かない。ラッキー探偵社に似てるかな。解決勝手にしちゃう感じで、探偵としては好きじゃないや。

たまにはっとするような表現があって。それは旅をしているときに思うことを言語化された感じ。アフリカの人はいつも旅をするように生きてるのかな？

新しい発見もいくつかあって。
ボツワナの話なんだけど、ボツワナは本当に平和でいいところだけど南アメリカはだめだって言ってたり
白人は物欲主義で家族とゆっくり過ごす時間もないからかわいそうって憐れんでいたり
車を運転してたらヘビをひいてしまって、でもふりかえってもそこにヘビはいなくて、これは車のボンネットに入ってしまったパターンだ！と恐れたり

わたしが抱いていたアフリカのイメージと異なる。
アフリカっていうとなんとか族とか貧困とかサファリとかそんなことばが浮かぶのだけれど、そのどれもここにはでてこなかった。（あ、貧困はお父さんの若かりし頃に炭鉱に出稼ぎに行ったってう話がちょっとそうかも。）

日本語で訳されてでてるみたいなんだけど、もうちょっとタイトルなんとかできなかったのかなぁって。失笑。

アフリカのボツワナで探偵社を始めたマ・ラモツゥエが、様々な依頼や事件を解決していく。安心して読める話。
BBC製作のTVドラマにもなっているし、ラジオでも放送されている。
BBC７のラジオドラマも聴きやすく、おすすめです。

年配の人が好むようなお話です。

ゆったりのんびりお茶を飲みながら、それでも確実に事件を解決していく・・・そんな主人公がとてもいいです。

舞台がアフリカ、というのがまたいいですね。

This really is as good as people (the critics) say.
It's enchanting and heart-warming, but not at all sweetly charming or condescending like I feared.
The prose is deceptively simple and direct, deceptively because the humour is kind of sly and tinged with sadness.
Precious is a warm but tough lady, but the African landscape she loves sounds beautiful but unforgiving and bleak at the same time.
It's more like a collection of short stories than a long novel, and the Alexander McCall Smith is a great old fashioned storyteller.
Read it: it'll make you smile (rather than laugh out loud and leaving you cold after).
