It is interesting to see "I", who is the narrator of this story in the middle of the sentences. I wonder if readers in English whose mother tongue is English have questions like "who a hell is this 'I,' which suddenly appeared?" I have three hyotheses to this. One is that readers in English also have the question. Another is that in English, presence of a subject is weaker than in Japanese since it is always there (not omissible), so they can naturally accept the emergence of the narrator. The other is that the story is originally written by the author directly to a child who she taught as a home tutor, so "I" is clearly the author (don't know how this fact is commonly known though).
